Unstriving: The Philosophy That Now Shapes My Work As A Speaker, Coach, Writer and Author.
After the NFL, through my move to Canada and eventually to Los Angeles, I was utterly exhausted.
My life had grown in some ways, but no matter how much I gave, something still felt off.
Like I was swimming upstream in my own life, working harder and harder against a current that never seemed to let up.
I was chasing a life that felt meaningful, fulfilling, and truly alive.
And I was convinced that if I just worked hard enough, I'd finally close the distance between where I was and where I wanted to be.
But the harder I swam, the more exhausted I became. And the gap never closed.
What I eventually came to understand is that life wasn't working against me.
It was trying to show me a new way forward.
But I kept reaching for the same old playbook, striving harder, pushing further, unable to see that the very thing I was relying on was the thing keeping me stuck.
That realization would eventually become the foundation for Unstriving, the philosophy that now shapes my work as a speaker, coach, writer, and author.
And that current isn't unique to my story.
It runs through the lives of so many people I meet, coach, and hear from every single week.
For so many of us, there comes a moment when we realize we've been doing everything right and still feel like we're falling behind.
So we do what we were taught to do.
We push harder and we optimize more in an attempt to finally get the thing to move.
And still, something isn't working.
Here's what I need you to understand.
You don't have an effort issue. You don't have a discipline issue. You don't have a success issue.
You have an identity issue.
Most of us have built our entire sense of self around striving, do more, be more, achieve more.
But while endless striving promised us wholeness, it left so many of us fractured instead.
Because you cannot build a new life by simply trying harder inside the old version of yourself.
At some point, the work stops being about what you do and starts being about who you are becoming.
That's the book I had to live before I could write it.
Unstriving: 12 Lessons on Authentic Success from a Recovering Overachiever is now available for pre-order.
This published book is for leaders, high achievers, entrepreneurs, professionals, parents, and anyone who has spent years building a successful life while sensing there has to be a more sustainable way to live, lead, and grow.
It's for anyone tired of grinding toward a life that keeps moving.
It's for the person who suspects more effort isn't the answer but doesn't know what is.
It's for the leader navigating a major life transition, the achiever carrying a type of exhaustion that rest alone doesn't solve, and the person who wants success and wholeness to coexist.
It's for anyone who still believes, somewhere underneath the exhaustion, that a different kind of life is possible.
If you've been following my work around Unstriving and the idea of reimagining success so ambition and wholeness can coexist, this book is the deepest expression of that message.
